The Basics of Between Center Turning. Essentials of spindle turning,
the foundation of bowl turning: tool selection and sharpening, wood
selection, lathe setup, the cuts - beads and coves, and basic safety.
Each student completes a carving mallet, a weed pot, and a spindle
duplication. Fee iincludes all materials.

The Basics of Faceplate Turning. Reviews Class 1 before presenting
the essentials of faceplate turning: Finding the bowl within the tree,
mounting techniques, the bowl gouge, and riding the bevel, nonviolent
woodturning. Each student will complete green wood and dry wood
bowls, including reverse chucking to finish the bottoms of the bowls.

Everyone’s favorite woodworking teacher, Paul Kinsey, presents
this course on General Industry Safety. Even though not required in
California, everyone who works in a shop or employs people in a shop
needs this information. This official OSHA 10 Hour General Industry
Safety course is presented as part of the OSHA Outreach Program.
Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate and a
wallet-sized DOL/OSHA completion card.
Modules are based on General Industry Safety Standards and include:
-Introduction to OSHA
-Machinery and Machine Guarding
-Hand and Portable Power Tool Safety
-Walking and Working Surfaces, Including Fall Protection
-Electrical Safety

Learn marquetry from a teacher and fine furniture maker whose pieces
are displayed in private collections and museums around the country.
Craig studied furniture making with James Krenov prior to opening his
own shop in Sunbury, Ohio. He is the author of four books and has taught
workshops in the US and Japan (www.cvstevens.com).
Marquetry is the ancient art of making pictures from veneers of wood
and other materials. These works of art may stand on their own, or be
inlaid into other works such as fine furniture. This extraordinary teacher
provides the guidance, tools and materials to enable you to design and
complete original works. Includes making the veneers, drawing and
transferring your design, cutting with both fret saw and scroll saw,
laminating and finishing your work. Most students complete several
pieces
during the week of instruction. Fee includes five days of
instruction, materials and tools.

Bill Hole, Faculty, College of the Redwoods Construction and Historic
Preservation Technology Program, and expert in architectural restoration
and sustainability, provides hands-on instruction in conservation of historic
wood windows. Removal of wooden sash, repairs and remedies, pulleys and
weight cords, along with glazing techniques will take the student through the
world of double-hung windows. The student fee for this class has been reduced
by sponsorship by the Eureka Heritage Society. Fee includes all materials
and supplies.

WoodFair 2008 Best of Show Exhibition winner Eric Felhaber and award winning
decoy maker Bill Pinches will guide students through the basic methods of bird
carving while carving a shorebird from a precut blank. During the process of carving
and sanding their projects students will learn the history and concepts of the decoy
in art and decorative bird carving as well as information on pattern making, cutting
out the bird, carving with knives and power tools and finishing techniques. Because
considerable hand strength is required, enrollment is limited to students 15 years of
age and older. Fee covers instruction, use of tools, and materials. The knives
students use in the class may be available for purchase.

This experienced woodworker and gifted teacher will show students
how to build a piece of fine furniture. Using an end table with one drawer,
the four hour class will cover an overview of design, wood preparation,
cutting joints, drawer making, glue-up, sanding, and finishing. Fee

Joel McCoy, cabinet business owner and graduate of the Ft Bragg Fine
Woodworking Program shares his extensive knowledge of veneering
techniques. Class includes band saw tuning, slicing veneers, layout
and milling, aesthetics of arranging sequentially sawn veneers, edge
jointing, substrate materials, veneer presses, making curved substrate
panels with bending ply, shop made forms, laminating a solid coopered
lumber core panel, bent laminations, jig building techniques, and
(if time permits) compound curved panels. Fee covers instruction,
materials, supplies and handouts.

After retiring from 29 years of teaching, Doralee Smith enrolled in
CR’s Construction Technology program and completed two years of
carpentry courses. In addition, she earned her certificate in Cabinetry
and Millwork. She has designed and built her own beautiful workshop
from the ground up. Doralee has designed this beginning construction
class for women with little or no carpentry experience to build confidence
and to help you get started on your first project. Through hands-on
activities and demonstrations, participants will gain experience in working
safely with hand and power tools. Students will have an opportunity to
design and build their own small
toolbox. Fee covers instruction, materials,
supplies, and handouts.
