LaPenta

Diqui LaPenta, Professor of Biology, Eureka Campus

? What do you love most about teaching at CR?

I really love watching the light in students' eyes when they finally grasp a difficult concept. It's especially rewarding and fun when it happens with students for whom biology is a requirement and not their major field of study.? It's also so much fun to see students make the connections between what they're studying and how it impacts their own lives.

? What do you love most about your discipline?

It's the study of life, so it's fun to show students how practical this difficult field can be. In any course there's only so much we can cover, so I encourage projects that allow students to explore anything at all that interests them as long as they can relate it to biology. I inevitably learn some really interesting things from my students.

? Is there anything else you would like your students to know about you?

If I didn't need to earn money to pay for food, shelter, and expenses related to my dogs, I'd stay in school forever learning as much as I could about as many different subjects as possible.

Diqui LaPenta has taught Biology at College of the Redwoods since 1998. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Biology in 1988 from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and her Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1994 from the University of Minnesota. Her thesis research focused on the flesh-eating bacteria, and her published articles on this topic made her briefly famous among a small group of really nerdy scientists. She enjoys being outdoors and active and has completed four half marathons. Other favorite activities mostly include spending time with family, friends and pets.
