The purpose of this Personal Enrichment Learning Series is to invite you to our beautiful campus to continue your learning about various topics. There is no cost to attend these workshops so attend as many as you like. Feel free to bring your friends and family with you. No registration is required. Coffee and cookies will be provided from 5:30 – 6 p.m. and the session will take place from 6 – 7 p.m. in the designated rooms.

“Compared to What!?: Liberation from Comparisons, Criticisms and Judgments”

Speaker > Ann Kyle Brown This workshop will explore the insanity of comparison and the delusion of perfection and how these “common-as-mud” mindsets prevent us from experiencing life as it actually is and tasting the happiness of the present moment. Ann Kyle Brown will lead a discussion on “what can our criticisms teach us about ourselves?”

“Hear Today, Hear Tomorrow: Lip Reading and Listening Skills, part 1”

This workshop explores the how, what and why of hearing loss as well as living with hearing loss and management of hearing loss. Ample time will be provided to review the latest digital hearing device technology as well as suggestions regarding assistive listening devices for the phone, TV and headphones.

“Edible and Toxic Mushrooms”

Teresa Sholars will be showing slides of the common edible and toxic mushrooms on the Mendocino Coast. She will also discuss the important ecological relationships that fungi have with local flora and fauna.

"Archaeological Discoveries near the Ten Mile River"

Speaker:  Thad M. Van Bueren
Local archaeologist Thad Van Bueren will share insights gained from scientific excavations at several Native American sites near the mouth of the Ten Mile River.  Those studies shed light on the dramatic and poorly documented transformation of Indian lifeways beginning before AD 1300 and continuing through AD 1959.

“What Drew Painters to the South of France in the late 19th and 20th centuries?”

Was it the light or was the shift of geo-political power to Nice during the war that made the south of France so attractive to artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? Professor Robert Rhoades takes you on a journey through Provence and along the French Mediterranean coast to examine art collections and the artists who produced them.

“Business Etiquette 101: Making a Positive Impression”

Etiquette is about presenting yourself with the kind of polish that shows you can be taken seriously. Etiquette is also about being comfortable around people (and making them comfortable around you!). Geisce Ly will share concise advice on many aspects of business conduct, including telephone manners, e-mail, meetings, and job seeking.

“Immune to Fraud? Think Again”

Speaker:  R. Kelley Gibbs
Losses due to fraud are estimated to be $994 billion annually. In this session, Kelley Gibbs will introduce you to the world of fraud, the fraud triangle, how fraud is generally committed, and how fraud is generally uncovered. You will also be given some tips on preventing fraud.

“TAK FOR ALT:  Documentary about Holocaust Survivor Judith Meisel”

Speaker: Mina Cohen
The film follows Judith back to Eastern Europe, from her pre-war childhood in Lithuania to her escape and liberation in Denmark. The film then shifts to her life in the United States, as an activist and an educator, drawing on her efforts to affect social change. This film has been shown on PBS and has won awards at international film festivals. Mina Cohen is Judith Meisel’s daughter and will be on hand to answer questions.

These events are free and open to the public.
